B.S. PLASMA PHYSICS [PHYS-679] SYLLABUS

Review: Fusion reactions, energy release in fusion of hydrogen isotopes, coulomb barrier, thermonuclear reactions, reaction cross-sections, fusion in early universe.

Thermonuclear Fusion: Introduction, fusion in a hot medium, reaction rate, energy sharing, energy carried by charged particles, power density, radiation losses from plasma, plasma confinement, performance criteria.

Elementary Plasma Theory: Plasma properties, theoretical plasma models, behavior of charged particles in electric and magnetic fields, collision phenomena in plasma, plasma oscillations.

Formation and Heating of Plasma: Ohmic heating, heating by magnetic compression, Ion-cyclotron resonance heating, plasma sources.

Progress Towards Fusion Power: Magnetic confinement machines, inertial confinement machines, requirements and problems, other fusion concepts, prospectus for fusion reactors.
