M.Sc. PROGRAM

System of Studies:
The Department of Physics, University of Karachi follows the semester
system. One academic year consists of two semesters. A student has to
complete a total of 18 credit hours during each semester. Students who
have passed B.Sc. (Honours), an additional 36 credit hours are required
to get his/her Masters degree. A student doing his Master after B.Sc.
(Pass) will have to complete 72 credit hours.

Duration of Courses:
The duration of Masters Courses, which are offered after completion
of B.Sc. (Pass) is two years. After attainment of Honours degree, the
Masters Course can be completed in one year.

Course Requirements for M.Sc. Degree:
- The course of studies for M.Sc. shall extend over a period of
four semesters and will be offered in two parts:
- Previous Year: There shall be twelve courses,
each of three credit hours, distributed equally over two semesters.
- Final Year: There shall be twelve courses
of three credit hours, distributed equally over two semesters.
- The program of studies for M.Sc. after B.Sc. (Honours) shall
extend over two semesters comprising of six courses, each of three
credit hours, per semester.

Conditions for Thesis / Projects:
- M.Sc. final year students, who have passed all the earlier courses
and secured an average of minimum of 65% marks in 500 level courses
for M.Sc. (previous) or in B.Sc.(Honours) degree courses for Honors
students, may be allowed to offer a thesis equivalent to six credit
hours in lieu of two optional courses.
- Students of M.Sc. final year may be permitted to offer one project
in lieu of one optional course of three credit hours, provided he/she
secures minimum of 60% marks in 500 level courses.
