ATOMIC & MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY RESEARCH LABORATORY

Brief History:
Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy laboratory was established in the year 1970 on the induction of a Ebert 3.4m plane grating Spectrograph. This Spectrograph was made available to the Department due to the efforts of Prof. Dr. Syed Mujitaba Karim (late) and Prof. Dr. M. Aslam Khan (late). This spectrograph was installed, mounted and calibrated by Prof. Dr. M. Aslam Khan (late), Prof. Dr. M. Rafi and Prof. Dr. Syed Samar Husnain (A research student in 1970). A king type furnace, a steel tube furnace, the assembly of high pressure Xeon Arc, various metallic arcs, the recording and measuring techniques were devised in the laboratory by the researchers working in the laboratory. This includes the work of Dr. Iqbal Ahmed Khan, Dr. Aslam Baig, Dr. Kamal Ahmed, Dr. Zafar Iqbal, Dr. Syed Samar Husnain and Mr. Shahid Mehmood.

A good number of students worked on this spectrograph on the electronic spectra of diatomic molecules for the M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees under the supervision of Prof. Dr. M. Rafi and Prof. Dr. Iqbal Ahmed Khan. Research work carried out in the laboratory was published in journals and represented in international and national conferences.

    Present Incharge of the Laboratory:
After Prof. Dr. M. Rafi retired in January 1993, Prof. Dr. Iqbal Ahmed Khan took the charge of the laboratory and continued the work to improve the lab facilities by introducing “Laser technologies”. During these years, many students completed their Masters thesis / projects as well as M.Phil. and Ph.D. M.Phil. degrees were completed by Shahid Mehmod, Muhammad Latif, Shujaul Hasan and Ph.D. by Dr. Kamal Ahmed.

    Current Research Activities:
Current activities include spectroscopic investigation on empirical potential energy functions, RKR potentials, Franck-Coudon Factors and Mesoscopic interactions. At present, the research group comprises of Dr. Zaheeruddin, Prof. Dr. M. Rafi and Prof. Dr. Iqbal Ahmed Khan.
    Future Interests:
In future, the group is interested to explore in the areas of laser induced fluorescence, opto-galvanic spectroscopy, opto-acousto spectroscopy and multi-photon spectroscopy.
