DURATION 1970– 1979

A refresher course was held in 1970 on “Teaching Modern Physics
for B.Sc.”, at the Department of Physics, University of Karachi
in collaboration with University Grant Commission (U.G.C.).

The first “All Karachi Science Fair” was held at the
Department of Physics, University of Karachi by the Physics Society,
on 9th May, 1972. This fair was the first of its kind in the history
of University of Karchi. Mr. Abdul Hameed Qadri was the Exhibition
Incharge. The Department was beautifully decorated. Head of the Department
was Dr. S.M.A. Tirmizi. Dr. Sheikh Ansar Husain and Mr. Abdul Hameed
Qadri welcomed the chief guest Mr. Dur Muhammad Usto, Education Minister
of Sindh. Mr. M. Asif Khan was the secretary of exhibition committee.

The auditorium of the Department was beautifully decorated. On one
side, there were the beautiful and informative stalls of Pakistan
International Airline (P.I.A) and U.S.I.S. They carried the models
of the air craft engines, computers and the Apollo development program.
Major Falk of the U.S air force represented the PAF aeronautical college
and demonstrated his electronic clock based on the integrated circuits.
N.E.D College got the first prize on Telephone System. The part of
the Science Fair which drew the utmost attention of the spectators
was the Close Circuit Television. The Departmental students set up
the studios in collaboration with Rizvi Brothers. The credit for this
studio which telecasted various interesting programs such as the Talent
Show Kasooti, Interviews, etc. goes to Asad Rzvi, Munib, M. Alvi,
Iqbal Rauf and Aftab Siddiqui. The panel of the judges comprised of
Dr. A.A. Anwar, Dr. Sheikh Ansar Husain and Mr. Abdul Hameed Qadri.

A Seminar was arranged by the Department of Physics with the collaboration
of the Department of Mathematics on the death anniversary of well-known
mathematician “Copernicus”, in 19th April, 1973.

American Astronauts, who were the crew of APOLLO-17 flight to moon,
visited the Department of Physics, University of Karachi on 18th June,
1973. Wearing red blazers decorated with the monogram of Apollo-XVII,
they were warmly received by the Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mahmud Husain
Qureshi (late) and Head of the Physics Department Prof. Dr. Sheikh
Ansar Husain, secretary students union Mr. M. Qasim Syed and members
of the Senate. Chairman, Dr. Sheikh Ansar Husain delivered a welcome
address, in honor of the guests. “The Physics Society”
also welcomed them in the Department. They addressed students and
teachers in the auditorium of the Department. Commander Eugene A.
Cernan spoke first. Ronald Evans and Harrison H. (Jack) Schmitt spoke
last and his speech was mainly around the technical aspects of Apollo
mission. They showed a documentary film of their voyage to moon. After
the film, they gave answers to questions of the audience. In the end,
Vice-chancellor Dr. Mahmud Husain (late) spoke about the importance
of Science and technology, appreciating the unbelievable work done
by the astronauts. Lastly, the Astronauts presented the photographs
taken while performing experiments on lunar surface for Karachi University,
Physics Society, personal copies to Dr. Mahmud Husain (late).

All Pakistan Intercollegiate and Institutional Science Fair held
in the Department of Physics under Karachi University Students Union’s
Scientific Society from October 12 – 15, 1976. The Fair was
inaugurated by Dr. Salimuzzaman Siddiqui, FRS and visited by more
than 5,000 students and teachers of the University of Karachi and
other colleges of Karachi.

The competition was divided into three categories i.e., Professional
Colleges, Non-Professional Colleges and InterDepartmental. The trophy
for Professional Colleges was on by the team of “National College
of Engineering & Technology, Karachi” and Non-Professional
Colleges by “Adamjee Science College, Karachi”. The gold
medal went to Sajjad Anwer of N.E.D College. The chairman of the panel
judges was Dr. Riaz Ahmed Hashmi, Chairman, Department of Physics.
The closed circuit television set up by Phillips Company provided
an opportunity for students to conduct and present their own program.
P.I.A provided a working jet engine for the students.

A shield presented by the “Physics Society” in the
reception for Professor Dr. Abdus Salam (late) on 31st December, 1979
on his visit to the Department of Physics, University of Karachi on
the occasion of the ceremony held on his award of Nobel Prize, in
Physics. Auditorium of the Department of Physics was jam packed and
the corridors on the top of the stairs was also packed by students
of the Science faculty peeping enthusiastically to have glimpse of
the national hero, the only Nobel laureate from Pakistan.
